iPhone 11 – A soft hands-on review of the device

Updated on November 19th, 2019

The smartphone has been announced alongside the Pro and iPhone 11 Pro MAX. It will be available from September 20

The new iPhone 11 will soon be available and is surprisingly cheaper than anyone envisaged. Still, early days but the device comes with a strong and vibrant screen, a variety of new colors and an upgraded camera. That last one is a major plus for photo enthusiasts.

As expected, it also comes with some demerits, such as the similarity of the design with last year’s version and reduced sleekness in comparison to the Pro.

The iPhone 11 was announced alongside the iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 Pro and easily passes for the most affordable amongst the three Apple smartphones in 2019.

It is expected that its reduced cost will make it gain more traction similar to when the iPhone XR was released in comparison to the iPhone XS

It differs in features to the new iPhone 11 Pro duo that were announced alongside it and here are a few stuff you need to know about the newly announced iPhone 11 which will be available soon with regards to its usage and strengths.

iphone 11 hands-on review

It must be noted that the release date for the iPhone 11 is September 20 and for those who’ll be looking to make commitments with regards to buying the device, the device’s pre-orders launch on September 13.

The price of the device appears to be buyer-friendly in the United States where it starts at $699 for the 64GB storage model and that is a $50 reduction in price when compared to the iPhone XR. This gesture from Apple is surely welcome.

Research into the price in other regions shows that it’s still lower than the XR model. In the UK, the smartphone goes for £729 for the 64GB model and AU$1,199 in Australia. In terms of cost, buyers will save £20 and AU$30 respectively when compared to the iPhone XR.

The 64GB model is closely followed by the 128GB model and 256GB model and are suitable for those who want an extra something when it comes to storage capacity. Let’s proceed with the phone’s qualities.

The iPhone 11 camera

The iPhone 11 comes with a large camera bump on the rear alongside a square design that houses two sensors. This is slightly different from the iPhone XR which has just one.

The square design on the rear eliminates the need for an extra square space. It could easily have had the thin lozenge like what was available in the iPhone XS but Apple chose to map out major differences between the design of the devices.

The bump houses two sensors, both 12MP. They come with a standard lens alongside an ultra-wide-angle lens which enables the user to pull back and capture more of a scene with an instant visual suggestion which prompts the user to do so.

The camera still allows for the capturing of background blur shots with the help of the portrait mode plus improved masking to ensure the production of portraits that have studio quality.

The camera produces quality images and Apple is working on adapting its night mode for testing in low-light settings and the test images that have been displayed thus far look good indeed.

Another major takeaway from this smartphone’s soft review is that the front-facing camera has seen some improvements. It now comes with a sensor that has been upgraded to 12MP and this will enhance the capture of wide-angle photos when the iPhone 11 is rotated to landscape. You can choose to capture slow-motion selfies if you please.

Here is a breakdown of the iPhone 11’s specs:

  • Weight: 194g
  • Dimensions: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm
  • CPU: A13 Bionic
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • OS: iOS 13
  • Screen size: 6.1-inch
  • Resolution: 1792 x 828
  • Battery:  1 hour longer than XR
  • Rear camera: 12MP + 12MP
  • Front camera: 12MP
  • Waterproof: IP68
  • Headphone jack: No

It was observed that Apple didn’t tamper with the iPhone XR’s formula for this one as it possesses the same chunkier chassis in comparison to the iPhone 11 Pro which comes with a chunkier border close to the 6.1-inch LCD screen.

The design differences between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Pro can be seen when both phones are held side by side as the iPhone 11 feels thicker in hand.

They repeated the iPhone XR’s LCD design on the smartphone to promote affordability in comparison to a much more expensive pricier OLED option. Regardless, the brightness and clarity persist and this helps in elongating the operational life of the battery.

In line with the bid to enhance saving of cost in the buying of the iPhone 11 device, its resolution is lower than that of the iPhone 11 Pro and this is spot on considering its lower price.

The iPhone 11 comes with a variety of attractive colors as was the case with the iPhone XR. You can opt for lavender, yellow, black, mint green, white as well as the device’s standard red color. The iPhone 11 is very fashion-friendly when compared to the more expensive iPhone models.

iPhone 11 battery life and iOS 13

As is the case with the other new iPhones, the iPhone 11 comes with iOS 13 and it makes full use of the operating system’s new features.

It comes with a similar build to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max in that it has an A13 Bionic chipset inside, albeit could be with less RAM. Nothing substantial on this yet!

Based on rumors, the smartphone had a lower performance score and is therefore expected not to be as efficient as the higher-end versions when operating under heavy load. However, Apple begs to differ by stating that the CPU is the fastest of any phone out there in the market.

Tests that were carried out on the demo unit didn’t show any glimpses of a slow down. However, this should be taken under advisement.

The device’s battery life is expected to be top-notch as it comes with an efficient processor and a power-friendly screen. According to Apple, the smartphone’s battery life surpasses that of the iPhone XR by an hour.

This is a pointer that more efficiency was built into some of the device’s internals. More details on how powerful the battery life is will surely be disclosed when a comprehensive review of the iPhone 11 is done.

The device is cost-friendly and will likely steal the show this year as did the iPhone XR. However, it only comes with a few notable upgrades and this can be seen in the camera and power functions of the device.

The iPhone 11 is arguably one of the cheapest iPhones in recent years and this will attract more folks as they will be able to lay their hands on an iPhone with far less than the projected $999 cost for the device.

It is an ideal option from Apple when the price and features it comes with are considered.
